The art of creating designs and textures on coffee with steamed milk dates back to the 1980s. While no one really knows who the first person to try their hand at latte art was, there is one thing we’re sure of: there’s nothing more satisfying to the eyes and tastebuds than the union of perfectly textured milk with high quality espresso. Wondering how it works? The secret is in the science of the milk.
Heating cold milk quickly through the injection of steam reorganises proteins in the milk and stabilises air bubbles, giving it the perfect texture to create latte art.
These latte art designs can be quite tricky to execute for a beginner, which is why latte art has historically been the realm of highly skilled baristas outfitted with expensive machinery and tools. However, what if we told you that you could easily become your own barista right at home with Nespresso?
Here are a few hacks to elevate your coffee game and ensure a stylish cup of coffee every time.

Latte Art Tips & Techniques
To really ensure you finally nail that perfect rosetta latte art, we spoke to Sacha, one of our experienced Swiss Nespresso boutique baristas on how to create your own latte art at home. Here’s what he had to say about crafting your milky masterpieces at home:
-
1Pay attention to milk temperature:
Starting out with cold milk is key because this gives the milk time to heat up and texturise gradually, achieving the perfect, velvety base for latte art. Conversely, milk that is at room temperature or already warm will reach the cut-off temperature too quickly and the milk would not have sufficient time to texturise properly. -
2Roasting influences colour:
To achieve more colour contrast for your latte art, opt for an intense, dark-roasted espresso, like those from our Ispirazione Italiana coffee range inspired by traditional Italian roasting techniques. For a more milky recipe with caramel undertones, choose a milder, lighter coffee blend like Volluto or Capriccio. -
3Stir, stir, stir:
To ensure the textured milk remains consistent and smooth for your latte art design, stir the milk well before pouring into the espresso. -
4Pouring technique:
Be mindful to start pouring your milk high above your cup of coffee to allow the milk to reach below the espresso, then bring the milk jug closer to the cup to begin your design, just like in our short online video tutorial.
With our range of machines and accessories, latte art tips, and plenty of practice, you’ll be well on your way to creating beautiful coffee masterpieces of your own just like a skilled barista – be it rosetta latte art, tulip latte art or any latte art designs you fancy.
